Meet the Author: The Road to Assisi, Jon Sweeney

Details: He conversed with both the Pope and the sultan. He transformed a taste for fine things and troubadour poetry into greater loves for poverty and joyful devotion to God. He never intended to found a religious "movement". Who was Francis of Assisi? What can we learn from his life? Paul Sabatier (1858-1928), a French Protestant and the first modern biographer of St. Francis, sought to find the man beneath the layers of myth and legend. Sabatier portrayed a fully human Francis. Edited by Jon M. Sweeney, Sabatier´s narrative includes insights from Bonaventure, Dante, Chesterton and Eco.

University of Notre Dame MNA Informational Open House

Discernment Day for Men on Religious Life

Idente Missionaries - Anniversary Mass

Details: Mass to mark the 4th Anniversary of the death of Dr. Fernando Rielo, the Founder of the Idente Missionaries. Please join us at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Tuesday December 9th, 2008 at 8:00 PM for this Special Anniversary Mass. Free Bus service will be provided from Santa Maria Parish in the Bronx.

NYC Master Chorale present "Lux Aeterna"

Details: The New York City Master Chorale (NYCMC), under the direction of Artistic Director Thea Kano, commences its third season on Saturday, December 13 at 8 PM at Church of St. Paul the Apostle (Columbus Avenue at 60th Street, NYC) and on Sunday, December 14 at 3 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (213 W. 82nd Street, NYC). Repertoire includes Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and arrangements of traditional holiday favorites. The New York City Master Chorale’s Assistant Conductor, Rasaan Bourke, will accompany the performances on piano and organ. Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna was composed for and premiered by the Los Angeles Master Chorale under the direction of Maestro Paul Salamunovich at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on April 13, 1997. Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to “Light” assembled from various sacred Latin texts. Mr. Lauridsen composed the Lux Aeterna in response to his mother’s final illness and found great personal comfort and solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels—spiritual, artistic and intellectual. Mr. Lauridsen is from the Los Angeles area and is currently on the faculty at the University of Southern California. The Church of St. Paul the Apostle is located at Columbus Avenue at 60th Street. Take the A, C, B, D, or 1 train to the 59th Street/Columbus Circle station and walk one block west to Columbus Avenue.

Catholics in New York - 1808 through 1946 at Museum of the City of New York

Details: Catholics in New York - 1808 through 1946 at Museum of City of New York. The Museum of the City of New York located at 1220 Fifth Avenue, New York City, will present an exhibition, Catholics in New York 1808-1946 , on the occasion of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Archdiocese of New York. The exhibition will tell the story of how the Catholic community grew over the course of a century and a half, gaining a political voice, creating a set of institutions that reshaped New York, and facing and overcoming prejudice. The exhibition begins May 16th and runs through December 31st. The hours of the Museum are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. Feast Day of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

Details: The Daughters of Charity in America and worldwide will celebrate an eventful year in Emmitsburg. Today marks the opening of the Bicentennial Celebration and the Feast Day of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Mass will be held in the Basilica at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton at 2:30 p.m., following by the unveiling of One of a Kind collage, and Lighting Ceremony. Public is invited.
